The boys and Dad built my raised bed boxes!

Given my broken foot (Easter), my husband and sons built my raised beds for me. I had planned initially to use recycled products to make the beds (pallets) but with my foot, that was just entirely too cumbersome.

We used two 12x2's we had in the garage and bought a couple more. Charles assembled them into 4'x8' boxes and helped the boys settle them in the part of the yard we chose for my garden. Right over the septic area, on the side where it is hard to mow and rarely used (near a gate for easy access and in mostly full sun.)

The boys spent the following couple days helping me fill the boxes. I decided to use raised beds and to fill them lasagna style. Using leaf mold and grass clippings from our own yard, we added topsoil from a local building site (formerly a cow pasture so VERY yummy dirt!) and some aged horse manure.

The evening we built the beds the boys found a Northern Water snake in our grass clippings! It was pretty grumpy...the weather was chilly that day (about 50 degrees, cold for early May in GA) and he was buried in the old grass clips, mostly dormant.

Charles flipped him back into the brush after we all got a good look.
